Best Management Practices for Industry

Pre-Design Meeting Process

Businesses considering establishing or expanding facilities in Utah may use DEQ's pre-design process to assist with obtaining environmental permits quickly and efficiently. Begin by sending a letter or e-mail to the Office of Planning and Public Affairs briefly explaining your production processes. DEQ will arrange a meeting with Division representatives to introduce the permit process, explain which permits are required, and detail pollution prevention techniques.

Environmental Management Systems (EMS)

The Utah EMS program provides technical assistance for regulated entities that want to implement a results-based Environmental Management System. To receive incentives, regulated entities must apply to the Clean Utah program and have an EMS approved by Utah DEQ, either through a Utah DEQ audit or through an approved third party audit.

Interested in developing an EMS for your business or organization? There are many benefits to implementing an EMS, including both environmental improvements and costs savings. Additional benefits for facilities that get their EMS approved and join the Clean Utah program can receive regulatory incentives and recognition. If you know you would like to implement an EMS, or want to improve your current EMS (whether or not you join Clean Utah) Utah DEQ has some training and some draft EMS guides.

Clean Utah

Clean Utah is a new program that encourages and rewards business and other permit holders for going beyond compliance to preserve and protect Utah's environment.

Environmental Permits

New or expanding companies may need to obtain various environmental permits before construction begins. Permits are required for activities that could adversely affect the environment. You will probably be regulated if your business could release pollutants to the air, land, or water, or if you store, treat, or dispose of hazardous or solid wastes.

Fees

Fees for Environmental Permits vary by Division.
